Marvis earned her BA degree in Journalism from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh. Previously, she published how-to-do articles for the Pittsburgh Press Newspaper, and worked as a full-time suburban news reporter for the North Hills News Record Newspaper. In addition, Marvis served over 16 years in the human service field as a mental health residential counselor, certified peer support specialist and administrative assistant. She is married and is a native of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
