Bacterial and Viral Infections will present acquired diseases associated with infections by bacterium or viruses. It will describe the symptoms of selected diseases, how these symptoms change with progression of the diseases, and how these symptoms lead to diagnosis. Underlying cause of these diseases will be discussed focusing on causative agent, specifically the flu virus causing flu, Ebola virus causing hemorrhagic fever, Mycobacterium tuberculosis (bacterium) causing tuberculosis, E. coli serotype O157:H7 (bacterium) causing gastrointestinal infections, and Salmonella tymphumirium (bacterium) causing food poisoning. The mode of transmission of the bacteria or virus will be described in the context of disease prevention and progression, ranging from environmental controls to vaccinations. Treatments that target the bacteria or virus will be presented for each example, including complications of drug resistance in certain treatment regimens. This book will evaluate the prospects for improved treatments that target these bacteria and viruses. The book will conclude with a summary of the main points of the book in a way that connects all of the chapters and points toward future prevention of these diseases.
