It follows chronologically events from before the Land Run to the Tulsa Race Riots and the Oklahoma City Sit-Ins, including stories gleaned from personal interviews of individuals who made important civil rights contributions to state history. The book is rich with photographs helping to tell the story of the impact African Americans have had on the state and on the nation. Included are chapters on civil rights leader Clara Luper, baseball great Joe Carter, basketball icon and musician Wayman Tisdale, as well as Ada Lois Sipuel Fisher, Roscoe Dunjee, All-Black Towns, the Buffalo Soldiers, and Desegregation.This edition of the book includes educational activity pages following each chapter.About the author: Rochelle Stephney-Roberson was born and raised in Oklahoma City. She grew up in a close knit family where racial pride and importance of education were instilled from both parents. Rochelle received a bachelor of science degree in Education and a master's degree in Library Science with emphasis on Elementary School Administration from the University of Central Oklahoma in Edmond, OK. She began working in the Oklahoma City Public Schools system in 1981 and again in 1986. She has worked with and educated youth for over 25 years.
