Leading international scholars challenge neoliberalism on its assumptions, way of reasoning and empirical evidence. In particular, they discuss critically, from the standpoint of radical perspectives, the issues of limiting the state and privatization, inflation and unemployment, and the possibility of a socialist society. They also discuss the current project for the monetary and economic union (EMU) of Europe, considered as an application of neoliberalism. They assess and question the internal market, the common currency and central bank independence; and investigate alternatives to the EMU project and the marketization agenda.List of Tables List of Illustrations Preface Acknowledgements Foreword List of Abbreviations Notes on the Contributors Notes on the Discussants Introduction Contemporary Economic Theory: Some Critical Issues; A.Vlachou & G.K.Christou PART I: THE CRITIQUE OF NEOLIBERAL ECONOMIC PARADIGM Privatization: Theory with Lessons from the U.K.; B.Fine Discussion: Comments on' Privatization: Theory with Lessons from the U.K.'; S.Mavroudeas & L.Tsoulfidis Limiting the State versus Expanding It: Criticism of This Debate Itself; R.Wolff Discussion: Comments on 'Limiting the State versus Expanding It: A Criticism of This Debate Itself'; A.Shaikh Explaining Inflation and Unemployment: An Alternative to Neoliberal Economic Theory; A.Shaikh Discussion: Comments on 'Explaining Inflation and Unemployment: An Alternative to Neoliberal Economic Theory'; T.Maniatis & N.Patralias Towards a Simple Analytics of Post-Capitalism: The Cherry Esplanade Conjecture; D.Laibman Discussion: Comments on 'Towards a Simple Analytics of Post-Capitalism: The Cherry Esplanade Conjecture'; D.Milonakis & R.Wolff PART II: THE MONETARY AND ECONOMIC UNION (EMU) OF EUROPE The Common Currency: Prospects and Problems; G.Katiphoris Global Capital Market Integration: Myths and Policy Challenges; L.Katseli Capitalist Globalization and the Emergence of the Monetary and Economicls›
