In 1968, British Leyland brought together most of Britain's motor manufacturers, with the intention of creating a robust unified group that could equal the strength of the big European conglomerates.  But this was not to be.  There have been many books about the politics and the business activities of British Leyland, but British Leyland - The Cars, 1968 - 1986 looks deliberately at the cars that came from the company.  The eighteen years of the corporation's existence saw a confusing multitude of different car types, but this book resolves these confusions, clarifying who built what, and when.  The book takes 1986 as its cut-off because this was the year that the old British Leyland ceased to exist and what was left of the car and light commercial business was renamed the Rover Group. Topics covered include the production histories and technical specifications of every major model; special overseas models; appendices on engines, code names and factories and finally, classic buying guidacne is given on the models built in Britain.

After graduating from Oxford and pursuing further academic studies at Reading,James Taylorspent 12 years working in central government. However, the lure of writing about cars – which he was doing in his spare time – proved too great and he decided to turn it into a career. James has now written well over 100 books in all, and among them have been several definitive one-make or one-model titles. He has written for enthusiast magazines in several countries, has translated books from foreign languages, and even delivers effective writing training in both the public and private sectors. He spent the best part of ten years as the editor ofLand Rover Enthusiastmagazine and has always counted the products of the old Rover Company and of Land Rover as his favourite subject. He also co-organised the “15 Years of Rover V8” event at Donington in 1982.
