The oldest archaeological sites in Europe are discussed in this collection of almost fifty papers, the proceedings of a colloquium held in Rennes in 2003. Supported throughout by maps, charts and illustrations of material evidence, notably lithics, the contributors discuss the original peopling of Europe. The papers cover the length and breadth of Europe, focusing on evidence for technology and industry, for exploitation of environments and animals, for settlement and mobility throughout the Palaeolithic. Regional variations in lithic technology and site types is also considered.
